AP SPECIAL STATUS

Demand

Special Category Status for Andhra Pradesh as per the promise made by Lawmakers in the parliament during State Bifurcation.

Basis

Following the bifurcation of the united state of A.P. the residual state lost a large part of its revenue due to Hyderabad remaining as the capital of Telangana. In a debate in the Rajya Sabha on the A.P. Reorganisation Act on February 20, 2014, then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said that SCS would be “extended to the successor State of Andhra Pradesh for a period of five years.” This oral submission by the then PM has been the basis for A.P.’s claim to the status.[1]

Legislative Status

Time Line

Protests Demanding Special Category Status for Andhra Pradesh was inspired by the 2017 pro-jallikattu protests in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. A Call to unite for peaceful protests on 26 Jan at various Locations all around the state was widely circulated on social media with RK Beach (Ramakrishna Mission Beach) in Vizagtaking the Center stage.
Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh spoke against the protests, and said that there was no need for it as the state can be benefitted with Special Package instead of Special Category.
DGP of Andhra Pradesh, N Sambasiva Rao told reporters that no permission was granted for protests at RK Beach on Jan 26.
Hours before the proposed protest on January 26 for demanding Special Status Category to Andhra Pradesh, AP police have clamped down on the gathering of five more persons by issuing prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Vizag, Tirupati, and other proposed protest Locations.[2]
Despite prohibitory orders scores of youth tried to reach RK beach in Vizag. Police quickly detained More than a 100 people.[3]
Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan, YSRCP Leader Jagan Mohan Reddy, and others expressed their distress on police action over a proposed peaceful protests.[4]

Supporters

The protests that gathered momentum on social media among students and youth just like Jallikattu Protests soon saw supporters from all quarters. A number of Actors, including the Jana Sena Chief Pawan Kalyan supported the protesters, and also insisted that it be conducted in a peaceful way. The opposition political party of Andhra Pradesh, YSRCP and its chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy are the fore front of the protests. PAWAN KALYAN IN 2014

Lok Sabha election results 2014: Pawan Kalyan magic working for TDP-BJP!

The power star Pawan Kalyan powered through the nation’s election scenery when he announced his entry into politics with the formation of his Jana Sena Party. Pawan Kalyan, a popular figure in Tollywood, seems to have influenced the voters with his support to the BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. At least that’s what the early poll results suggest.
The Gabbar Singh star Pawan Kalyan, who extensively campaigned for Modi in Andhra, has a clean image which seems to have  worked well for BJP-TDP alliance. The JSP supremo, who launched his party on March 14, has said his party is here to question and not to contest elections. His awe-inspiring speech became viral over the internet and the people seem to be buying his promises.
The star Pawan Kalyan had earlier embarrassed his brother mega star Chiranjeevi by backing BJP. Chiranjeevi, who had joined Congress in 2011, was visibly flustered at Pawan’s decision to support BJP, but stated that Pawan Kalyan’s entry into politics is a welcome sign. It is also rumoured that Pawan Kalyan had a special lunch with Chandra Babu Naidu at the TDP supremo’s residence.
This tale of two brothers at loggerheads  may not see an end soon, but the election results that are coming in suggest that power star’s magic has triumphed over mega star’s image. With the TDP-BJP combine alliance leading in 12 Lok Sabha constituencies in Seemandhra, power star Pawan Kalyan’s power is for everyone to see.

JANA SENA

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is fast losing its cadres to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the Congress in Telangana.
In the last 10 days, TDP members from different districts, including a few state leaders, have joined the TRS on three occasions. At least 10 TDP members joined the TRS on each occasion. Similarly, at least 10 leaders switched to the Congress along with former TDP working president and MLA Revanth Reddy on 31 October.
According to information from the TRS office, TDP cadres from Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda districts, including Kancherla Bhupalreddy, an influential leader from the Nalgonda assembly constituency, which is currently held by the Congress, were officially inducted into the TRS on 30 October and 1 and 6 November.
Similarly, on 8 November, some minority leaders from the TDP were inducted into the TRS. “This is just a mind-game being played by the TRS leaders. Only a few lower-level leaders from Kondangal constituency (held by Revanth Reddy), who are Revanth’s followers, left for the Congress. Senior leaders from the TDP have not left the party,” said Ravula Chandrashekar Reddy, TDP member.
Apart from those joining the TRS, when Revanth Reddy switched to the Congress, state-level TDP leaders, including former MLAs and ministers, also shifted with him. His move reduced the number of TDP MLAs in Telangana to just two, from 15. Twelve MLAs defected to the TRS last year, and a few of them were inducted into the state cabinet after that.
“This is something that will continue for a while. Naturally, the TDP here will vanish, because second-rank leaders have nothing to stay for in the party. And going to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not an option, because that colour will stick, and you won’t get other votes,” said Leo Augustine, former general secretary of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL).
Telangana Pradesh Congress President (TPCC) official spokesperson Sravan Dasoju said there is a lot of confusion in the TDP about its political future. “The party cadres know that the it cannot contest alone in the 2019 state assembly elections. Also, Revanth was one its vociferous leaders and he has joined the Congress,” Dasoju told Mint.
“TDP cadres have joined the TRS in the presence of state cabinet ministers in my constituency and in other districts places like Kodangal, Kalvakurthi etc recently. More are likely to follow. When Jharkhand was bifurcated from Bihar, the Lalu Prasad Yadav-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) collapsed there, as it was seen as a Bihar-based party. Similarly, the TDP will die a natural death in Telangana because it has roots in Andhra Pradesh,” said Balka Suman, TRS MP from Pedapally constituency
